Post-Rock! Nostalgia (10/18/12)

With the recent release of Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s latest album, Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend!, we at Rockaphilly thought that we would re-listen to some of our old favorite GY!BE side projects. Here are some (there are more, but this will do for now):

1. A Silver Mt Zion (aka Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra): Initially started as a vehicle for Efrim Menuck and others to explore song-composition, they have become one of the more long-standing projects. While they have had great success with subsequent albums, their debut, He Has Left Us Alone But Shafts Of Light Sometimes Grace The Corner Of Our Rooms, is dear to our hearts. Check out “Sit in the Middle of Three Galloping Dogs” as well as “13 Angels Standing Guard . . . “.

2. Set Fire To Flames: A project involving a vast majority of the GY!BE crew, they have put out some of the most beautiful music of the genre. While the double album Telegraphs in Negative/Mouths Trapped In Static weighs heavy on found-sound and noise manipulation, their debut, Signs Reign Rebuilder, has moments of melodic beauty that surpasses work even on some GY!BE records.

3. Fly Pan Am: This band, now defunct, involved guitarist Roger Tellier-Craig and was one of the most interesting bands we’ve ever heard. While seemingly a lazy description, “minimalist funk” is an appropriate description of Fly Pan Am. Song recommendations: “L’espace Au Sol . . .”, “Rompre L’indifference . . . ” and “Univoque/Equivoque”.

4. Hrsta: A pseudonym of Mike Moya from GY!BE, he has created some of our favorite song compositions. He sings too.

5. Valley of the Giants: A supergroup of sorts, the project involved members of GY!BE, Broken Social Scene, Do Make Say Think, Shalabi Effect, and Strawberry. The album was OK overall but has an incredibly moving piece called Whaling Tale, which gives the band a deserved spot on our favorites list.
